The seat in South Carolina’s 19th State Senate District is vacant following the death of longtime legislator John Scott. The 19th District lies just north of Columbia, covering much of northern Richland County. Former Columbia City Councilor Tameika Devine emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, earning a majority of the vote and avoiding a runoff. Kizzie Smalls was the only Republican who filed to run for this heavily Democratic district. She previously ran in State House District 77, another challenging Columbia area district for Republicans. There is also a candidate from the United Citizens Party and an independent candidate on the ballot as well. Polls close at 7 p.m. (EST). We will have the election results below once they do.
