We’re tracking election results for just one contest today, in Iowa State House District 29. The 29th District covers a majority of Jasper County, including almost all of Newton, which is the county seat. The seat is vacant after Democrat Wes Breckenridge resigned after taking a job as assistant director of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Running to replace him are Jon Dunwell, the Republican nominee and local pastor who lost a close race to former Rep. Breckenridge back in the November 2020 general election, and Steve Mullan, the Democratic nominee and a Newton City Council member. As Derek Willis pointed out in our weekly newsletter a few weeks ago (you can subscribe for free on our home page), the 29th District has been a microcosm of Iowa’s statewide voting trends in the past decade. The district went for Barack Obama with 56% of the vote in 2012, then swung to Donald Trump in 2016 with 53% of the vote (former Rep. Breckenridge won a three-way race that year with 51%). Most recently in 2020, former President Trump won the district with 57%, while former Rep. Breckenridge held his vote share at 51%. We expect another close one tonight, so make sure you’re checking in with us throughout the night. We’ll have election results once polls close at 8 p.m. (CDT)
