There are three state legislative special elections today. We will have election results for you here as they come in.
Georgia
First, in Georgia, there are two state House of Representatives seats open following resignations by the incumbents. One in State House District 34 in Cobb County, which covers parts of both Kennesaw and Marietta. It’s open after Bert Reeves resigned to become Georgia Tech VP of Institute Relations. The race features two Democrats, including the nominee from the November general election in Priscilla Smith; two Republicans, including former Kennesaw mayor pro-tem David Blinkhorn; and one Libertarian. If no one achieves a 50%+1 majority, the top two vote-getters will face each other in a July 13 runoff election.
The other race is in House District 156, which covers all of Montgomery and Toombs Counties, as well as parts of Appling and Jeff Davis Counties. This seat is open after Greg Morris resigned after being elected to the State Transportation Board for the 12th Congressional District. The race features one Democrat and two Republicans, including Chairman of the Toombs County Republican Party Leesa Hagan. It is the first time a Democrat has run in the 156th District since it was drawn. Just like the other race, if no one achieves a 50%+1 majority, the top two vote-getters will face each other in a July 13 runoff election. We will have election results for both races once polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT)
Wisconsin
In Wisconsin, the seat in State Assembly District 37 is open after John Jagler was elected to the State Senate back in April. The district contains parts of Dane, Dodge, and Jefferson Counties, as well as the city of Columbus in Columbia County. There is only a Republican primary today since only one Democrat filed to run. The Republican field features eight candidates, many of whom have held local office in the district. The winner will face Democrat Pete Adams and independent Stephen Ratzlaff in a general election on July 13. We will have election results once polls close at 8 p.m. (CDT)
