There are state legislative special elections in three states today. Two in Georgia, two in Alabama, and one in Wisconsin. We will have the election results for you here as polls close in each state.
Georgia
First, in Georgia, there are two runoffs taking place for State House of Representatives seats that are open following resignations by the incumbents. The first race is in State House District 34 in Cobb County, which covers parts of both Kennesaw and Marietta. It’s open after Bert Reeves resigned to become Georgia Tech VP of Institute Relations. This race pits Democrat Priscilla Smith against Republican Devan Seabaugh, both of who advanced to today’s runoff after finishing in the top two in a general election last month.
The other race is in State House District 156, which covers all of Montgomery and Toombs Counties, as well as parts of Appling and Jeff Davis Counties. This seat is open after Greg Morris resigned after being elected to the State Transportation Board for the 12th Congressional District. The race features Chairman of the Toombs County Republican Party Leesa Hagan and Republican Wally Sapp, a local car dealer. They were the top two finishers in last month’s general election. We will have election results for both races once polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT)
Alabama
Now to central Alabama, where State Senate District 14, which covers parts of Bibb, Chilton, and Shelby counties, is vacant after Cam Ward was appointed Director of the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles by Governor Kay Ivey. Facing off in this general election are Democrat Virginia Applebaum, a local attorney, and Republican April Weaver, who was a Regional Director for the US Department of Health and Human Services during the Trump Administration. April Weaver emerged as the decisive victor in a special Republican primary back in March. Virginia Applebaum faced no primary opposition.
In the other chamber of the Alabama Legislature, the seat for State House District 73 in southwestern Shelby County is open after Matt Fridy was elected to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. This general election pits Democrat Sheridan Black against Republican Kenneth Paschal, who finished second in the primary and advanced to win in the runoff election by just 64 votes. Both are on their county party’s executive committees. We will have election results for both races once polls close at 7 p.m. (CDT)
Wisconsin
In Wisconsin, the seat in State Assembly District 37 is open after John Jagler was elected to the State Senate back in April. The district contains parts of Dane, Dodge, and Jefferson Counties, as well as the city of Columbus in Columbia County. This general election features one Democrat, one Republican, and one independent. The Republican, William Penterman, survived a crowded primary contest last month, winning his party’s nomination by only 16 votes. We will have election results for this race once polls close at 8 p.m. (CDT)
