There are three special elections for open state House of Representatives seats today. Two in New Hampshire, a general and a GOP primary, and one general in Alabama. We will have the election results of all three for you here.
New Hampshire
The first race in New Hampshire is in the 7th Hillsborough District which covers the entirety of Bedford. The seat is open after Republican Rep. David Danielson passed away back in May. Since only one member of each party filed to run, the primary was canceled, and the general election was moved up to today. Running for the Republicans is Linda Camarota, who held one of the seats in the district from 2019-2020 before opting not to run for reelection last year. Running for the Democrats is a former Bedford town councilor and school board member in Catherine Rombeau. While Bedford traditionally leans Republican (five of the six seats for their state House of Representatives district were won by Republicans in November), President Biden and Senator Shaheen, both Democrats, won the town in 2020. We will have tonight’s election results for you here once polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT)
The other race in New Hampshire is a Republican primary in the 9th Cheshire District, which covers Dublin, Harrisville, Jaffrey, and Roxbury. There is no Democratic primary since only one Democrat filed to run. The seat is open after Douglas Ley passed away back in June. Two Republicans are vying for the nomination, Lucille Decker, a former school board member in Jaffrey, and Rita Mattson, who ran for one of the district seats back in November. Both seats in this district have in recent elections been held by Democrats. We will have tonight’s election results for you here once polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT)
Alabama
In Alabama, there is an open seat in the state House of Representatives District 78, which lies in northern Montgomery County and includes part of Montgomery city. The seat is open after Kirk Hatcher was elected to the State Senate back in March. Democrat Kenyatte Hassell emerged first from a four-person primary back in May to advance to a primary runoff in June which he was victorious in as well. He faces Republican Loretta Grant in today’s special general election. We will have election results from this race once polls close at 7 p.m. (CDT)
