Democrats are heading to the polls across the Palmetto State to vote in the first Democratic presidential contest of the 2024 cycle with state delegates bound to the results. Last week, President Biden notched a victory in New Hampshire where he didn’t appear on the ballot, but still won thanks to a grassroots write-in campaign organized by local Democrats. His two top challengers from that race, U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and Marianne Williamson, are his only competition on the South Carolina ballot.
South Carolina is an open primary state, meaning that anyone regardless of their current party affiliation can show up and vote in the party primary of their choosing. Voters can only vote in one party’s primary, however, so any voter who casts a ballot in the Democratic primary will be ineligible to vote in the Republican primary on February 24.
