Election Results: Wisconsin Supreme Court and Chicago Mayoral Runoff

April 4, 2023 by Max Gowins

Today we have what may be the most important Election Day of 2023. The balance of power in the Wisconsin Supreme Court is up for grabs, while in Chicago a new mayor will be elected. Make sure you are checking in with us here throughout the night for the most up-to-the-minute election results you will find anywhere all in one place.

Wisconsin

Conservative justices currently hold a 4-3 majority on the state’s Supreme Court, but that majority could be lost with conservative Justice Patience Roggensack coming to the end of her 10-year term, retiring at the age of 82. Supreme Court elections in Wisconsin are technically nonpartisan races, but the ideological leanings of all the justices and candidates are usually known. This year is no different with the two candidates running to replace Justice Roggensack. Conservative candidate Daniel Kelly and liberal candidate Janet Protasiewicz advanced from the field of four running in the February 21 primary. For more on this race and what’s at stake be sure to check out Nick Field’s breakdown before the polls close tonight at 8 p.m. (CDT)

Chicago

In Chicago, no candidate was able to reach the 50%+1 threshold to avoid a runoff in the February 28 election. Incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot failed to finish in the top two, but Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson did manage to break through in the crowded field. While the Chicago mayor’s office is a nonpartisan office, both candidates are Democrats. Vallas has taken the more moderate lane of the party, while Johnson has tread the more progressive path in this race. For more on this race and the possible paths to victory for each candidate, check out Zach Donnini’s breakdown before the polls close tonight at 7 p.m. (CDT)
