New York State Assembly
There are two special elections to fill vacant seats in the New York State Assembly today, one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan. Both seats became vacant after the former incumbents won seats on the NYC City Council back in November. In Brooklyn, the race for the 60th District seat could be a close contest with the Working Families Party opting to nominate their own candidate to run against the Democrat’s endorsed candidate. California State Assembly
In California, there are two blanket primaries to fill vacant seats in the State Assembly. In San Francisco, the seat in District 17 is vacant after David Chiu was appointed San Francisco’s city attorney. Though the primary is open to all parties’ candidates, all four that will appear on the ballot are Democrats. The top two finishers will move on to an April 19 general election. In Los Angeles County, the seat in District 49 is open after Edwin Chau was appointed as a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court. There are just two candidates running in this race, a Republican and a Democrat. Since there are only two candidates, this race will not go on to a general election, and the winner of today’s contest will assume office. Milwaukee Mayor Special Election
In Milwaukee, a special election is being held after former mayor Tom Barrett was named the United States ambassador to Luxembourg. Milwaukee Common Council President Cavalier Johnson was named acting mayor and is one of the candidates in today’s contest. He faces six challengers including Milwaukee County sheriff Earnell Lucus, Wisconsin state senator Lena Taylor, Milwaukee alderwomen Marina Dimitrijevic, and Milwaukee alderman Bob Donovan. The top two finishers will move on to an April 5 general election. The winner of that contest will serve out the final two years of the term. Bonus Coverage: San Francisco Unified School District Recall Election
We’re also tracking the election results of the recall elections happening today for the San Francisco School Board. Three current members of the school board are facing a recall election today where residents will be voting “yes” or “no” on whether or not they will serve out the remainder of their terms. Parents that brought the recall forward say that the school board’s priorities during their time in office have been misguided. San Francisco Mayor London Breed has been one of the most prominent supporters of the recall effort. We will have the election results below once polls close at 8 p.m. (PST)
