The seat in South Carolina’s 42nd State Senate District is vacant after Democrat Marlon Kimpson resigned to take a job in the Biden administration. The 42nd District runs from Charleston, through North Charleston, and reaches just into Dorchester County. Three Democrats are competing to fill the vacancy in this deep blue district. Two of the candidates are current members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, and the other is a former member. If no candidate achieves a 50%+1 majority of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a September 19 runoff election. Only one Republican filed to run for the vacancy so there will be no primary. They will face off against the eventual Democratic nominee in a general election on November 7. Polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT). We will have the election results below once they do.
