Election Results: New Hampshire State House Special Primaries, Wichita and Spokane Mayoral Primaries

August 1, 2023 by Max Gowins

New Hampshire

We’re tracking elections from coast to coast today, starting with a set of special primaries in Rockingham County, NH’s 1st State House District which covers the towns of Northwood and Nottingham. The seat is vacant after Republican Benjamin Bartlett resigned citing health concerns days before the Department of Veterans Affairs opened an investigation into a potential conflict regarding his employment with the agency. Only one Democrat, former Nottingham Selectman Hal Rafter, filed to run for the vacancy. Two Republicans are vying for a chance to face him in the September 19 general, Northwood Selectman Jim Guzofski, and recent college grad Jessica Sternberg who is active in the New Hampshire College Republicans. Republicans currently hold a narrow 200-197 majority in the State House. Republican candidates swept the district’s three seats back in November, but only by a very narrow margin with only 10 votes separating third and fourth place. Polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT). We will have the election results below once they do.

Wichita, KS

In Wichita, Mayor Brandon Whipple is running for a second term. He faces eight challengers in a nonpartisan primary. Though the contest is nonpartisan, the party affiliations are known for many of the candidates, including Mayor Whipple who is a Democrat. Among his challengers are Bryan Frye, a Republican on the Wichita City Council, and Lily Wu, a former local news anchor who identifies as a Libertarian. The top two finishers will move on to the general election on November 7. Polls close at 7 p.m. (CDT). We will have the election results below once they do.

Spokane, WA

Last, we head to Spokane, WA where incumbent Mayor Nadine Woodward is running for a second term. She faces six challengers in a nonpartisan primary, including the former Washington State Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown. The top two finishers will move on to the general election on November 7. Polls close at 8 p.m. (PDT). We will have the election results below once they do.
