Akron, OH
The Mayor’s office in Akron is open after Democratic mayor Dan Horrigan opted not to seek a third term as mayor. His decision leaves the field wide open in today’s Democratic primary which has seven candidates running. His choice for his successor is Marco Sommerville who served in multiple roles in Horrigan’s office. Sommerville also has been endorsed by Congresswoman Shontel Brown and various Ohio unions. City Councilor Shammas Malik has the endorsements of the two largest papers in Northeast Ohio as well as various Democratic groups. City Councilor Tara Samples, who was the Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor in Ohio last year, has been endorsed by Cornel West and other progressive groups. No Republican or Independent candidate collected enough signatures to make the ballot, so barring a write-in candidacy, the winner of today’s Democratic primary will be uncontested in the November 7 general election. Lincoln, NE
In Lincoln, incumbent mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird is running for a second term in office. She faces former State Senator Suzanne Geist who resigned her seat in the State Senate earlier this year to run for mayor. Massachusetts State House Specials
There are also a couple of special elections for the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in Boston today. Rep. No Republican filed to run for either vacancy so both of today’s contests are Democratic Primaries. Polls close at 8 p.m. (EDT)
