We have election results for just one race today, in Louisiana’s 7th State Senate District. The District covers parts of Jefferson, Orleans, and Plaquemines Parishes, including the Algiers neighborhood in New Orleans. The seat is open after Troy Carter was elected to the US House of Representatives in a special election in the 2nd Congressional District back in April. The contest uses Louisiana’s majority-voting system, known colloquially as “jungle primaries”. This means every candidate from every party will all be on one ballot. If no candidate wins a 50%+1 majority of the vote, the top two candidates move onto a July 10th general election. The race features three Democrats, including state representatives Gary Carter Jr. and Mack Cormier, and one Republican. It is the first time a Republican has run in this district since 2007. You can find election results here once polls close at 8 p.m. (CDT)
