We’re tracking the election results from special elections in four states today including the race to replace Devin Nunes in California’s 22nd Congressional District. There are also state legislative special elections in California, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, as well as a special election for mayor in Milwaukee.
California
Devin Nunes announced back in December that he is retiring from Congress to run former President Trump’s media company. As a result, California’s 22nd Congressional District gets to hold one more contest under the current district lines before a new map takes effect. The current 22nd District covers the northwestern corner of Tulare County and cuts right through the center of Fresno County and includes part of the city of Fresno. Six candidates are running to replace Nunes, four of them Republicans and two Democrats. If no candidate achieves a 50%+1 majority of the vote, the top two finishers will move on to a June 7 general election. The winner of the election will have to run in a different district moving forward as this district as it currently exists has been drawn out of the map. Three of the candidates in today’s contest are already registered to run in the new 21st District, which is viewed as a solidly Democratic district and currently has a Democratic incumbent. We will have election results once polls close at 8 p.m. (PDT)
There are also three vacancies in the California State Assembly that are holding primaries today. All three vacancies were from resignations to take up other opportunities. In two of the races, more than two candidates are running, meaning that if no candidate achieves a 50%+1 majority of the vote, the top two finishers will move on to a June 7 general election. Polls for these races also close at 8 p.m. (PDT)
Georgia
In Georgia, the seat in State House District 45 is vacant after Republican Matt Dollar resigned to become deputy commissioner of economic development with the Technical College System of Georgia. The district lies in eastern Cobb County and part of Sandy Springs in Fulton County. Vying to fill the vacancy are four candidates, three Republicans, and a Democrat. Former Rep. Dollar won reelection back in 2020 with a 10% margin of victory, while President Biden won the district by less than 1%. If no candidate achieves a 50%+1 majority of the vote, the top two finishers will move on to a May 3 runoff election. The one Democrat running today has already filed to run again for the seat in November, however, none of the Republicans have. State Rep. Sharon Cooper who currently represents the 43rd District has filed to run for the 45th District after the new district lines go into effect. We will have election results once polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT)
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania also has three vacancies they are filling in their state House of Representatives today. Two of the seats are safe Democratic seats in Allegheny County, and one is a solidly Republican seat in Luzerne County. All three vacancies were caused by an election or appointment to another office. Polls in all races close at 8 p.m. (EDT)
Milwaukee
In Milwaukee, a special election is being held after former mayor Tom Barrett was named the United States ambassador to Luxembourg. Milwaukee Common Council President Cavalier Johnson was named acting mayor and is one of the candidates who advanced to today’s contest. He faces Milwaukee alderman Bob Donovan who came on second in the February 15 primary. The winner of today’s contest will serve out the final two years of the unexpired term. We will have the election results below once polls close at 8 p.m. (CDT)
