It’s an election Saturday in Alaska, where voters are heading to the polls to fill the vacancy in the state’s lone US House district. The seat is vacant after Republican Don Young unexpectedly passed away back in March. Former Rep. Young served Alaska in the House for 49 years and was always a fierce advocate for his state. There are 48 candidates running to succeed him. The most notable among them is former Governor and 2008 Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin. Other candidates of note include Republican Nick Begich, who comes from an Alaskan Democratic political dynasty; Democratic Anchorage Assemblyman Christopher Constant, who has endorsements from members of the Begich family; independent Al Gross, who finished second in the state’s 2020 US Senate race against Senator Dan Sullivan; and North Pole city councilor Santa Claus (no, this is not a joke). Candidates from all parties will appear on the same ballot, and the top-four finishers will move on to the August 16th general election which will utilize ranked-choice voting. Polls close at 8 p.m. (AKDT), midnight (EDT), we will have election results below once they do.
