DDHQ Morning News Spotlight: Progressive Success in PA and OR House Primaries, Plus New York Special Master House Map Release

Morning Headlines

  • Last Tuesday’s election night is beginning to draw to a conclusion. Nearly all the vote has been counted in both Pennsylvania and Oregon, save for military/overseas ballots (as well as very few mail-in ballots) in Pennsylvania and a vast majority of votes in Clackamas County, Oregon.
  • Trump-endorsed Mehmet Oz and businessman David McCormick are still locked in a tense fight for the GOP Pennsylvania Senate nomination. Oz is ahead by 1,070 votes with well over 99% reporting, but McCormick has remained publically confident he will still win the primary. McCormick will hope that the remaining absentee and overseas ballots will push him over the top, but could also file extensive litigation because the race is so close.
  • Progressives around the country are elated by strong Democratic Primary performances in OR-05 and PA-12. Jamie McLeod-Skinner holds a 9,668 vote margin over incumbent Blue Dog Democrat and Biden-endorsed Kurt Schrader. Schrader needs to win about 75% of the outstanding vote in his stronghold of Clackamas County to catch up with McLeod-Skinner but is only running at 55% thus far. Progressive Summer Lee has defeated AIPAC-backed Steve Irwin in the Allegheny County-based PA-12 Democratic primary. Irwin conceded Friday evening after Pittsburgh election-day votes pushed Lee over the top.
  • The state’s Special Master released the New York US House map for 2022-2030. The map is a significant gain for Republicans compared to Democrats’ previous effective and surgical gerrymander but is still slightly better for Democrats than the old map. The map most notably shores up Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) in her Staten Island-based district, declines to create a Republican-leaning Orthodox Jewish COI district in South Brooklyn, breaks nearly 80 years of precedent by combining the Upper East and Upper West Sides of Manhattan into a single district, and produces solid Democratic pickup opportunities throughout the decade in NY-01, NY-02, and NY-22. But the map could also lead to massive Democratic losses in the state in 2022, with Republicans hoping for a best-case 16-10 split.
  • Since DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney chose to run for re-election in a slightly more blue-leaning district (moving from an open Biden+8 NY-18 to a double-bunked Biden+10 NY-17), he has found himself at the center of major controversy. Freshman Representative Mondaire Jones eventually backed down from a nasty and expensive primary against Maloney in the Westchester County-based NY-17, instead choosing to move a hundred miles to the South and run in the open NY-10 based in south Manhattan and northwest Brooklyn. Jones will face former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio and dark horse NY Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou in a stacked primary field.
