DDHQ Morning News Spotlight: A Three-Way Battle between Republicans, Moderates, and Progressives Intensifies in the Rio Grande Valley

May 26, 2022 by Zachary Donnini

Morning Headlines

  • As votes continue to be tabulated in Texas, moderate and progressive Democrats alike are closely watching results in TX-15 and TX-28. Both districts are based in the Rio Grande Valley. Most Democratic voters in TX-15 are concentrated in Hidalgo County, and the district moved from Clinton+13 in 2016 to Trump+2 in 2020. After incumbent Vicente Gonzales chose to run for re-election next door in the safer turf of TX-34 (Biden+16), TX-15 became an open district and top Republican target. With star recruit Monica de la Cruz running in TX-15 again after nearly defeating Gonzales in 2020, Democrats hope for a strong candidate to help them hold the district even in a poor political environment. Currently, progressive Michelle Vallejo leads moderate Ruben Ramirez by just 23 votes, with mainly provisional votes outstanding. In TX-28, centrist Democratic Incumbent Henry Cuellar clings to a slightly more comfortable 177 vote lead over progressive Jessica Cisneros. Cuellar is a good fit for the Biden+7 district, outperforming Joe Biden by over 15 points in 2020. The winner will face conservative Republican Cassy Garcia, an ex-Ted Cruz aid. Garcia defeated anti-establishment Sandra Whitten, who late attacked Garcia and called her a “puppet” after her primary defeat became evident.
  • President Trump hopes to score a much-needed win in the Georgia GOP Lieutenant Governor Primary, beginning his comeback trail from defeats in the Georgia Governor and Secretary of State primaries. With only five outstanding precincts in the entire state, Trump’s pick of Burt Jones has earned 50.1% of the vote, needing to stay above 50% to win the primary without a runoff. But with the five precincts left in Dekalb County (where Jones is only winning 42% of the vote) and a statewide recount likely to ensue, a win is far from certain for Jones.
