Morning Headlines
- Former Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate James Craig has announced he will run as a write-in candidate in the GOP Primary. Craig was leading polls before he was kicked off the ballot for falling below the threshold for required signatures after considering the thousands of forgeries submitted. He paid an independent firm to collect signatures, but the firm submitted obvious “phony” forgeries, leading to Craig being kicked off of the ballot. This announcement comes after news that new GOP front-runner Ryan Kelley was arrested by the FBI and charged with several misdemeanors in connection with the January 6th event at the Capitol.
- DDHQ has officially projected that Ryan Zinke will win the GOP nomination in MT-01. Zinke holds a 1,588 vote margin over challenger Albert Olszewski with nearly all of the vote counted. Since Zinke has served as Montana’s At-Large Representative before and held the endorsement of Donald Trump, it was a serious surprise that the race was even this close. Zinke was likely hurt by his time as Secretary of the Interior when he was forced to leave his post for “repeatedly violating department ethics rules.” The final votes were reported from Lincoln County, which was delayed after ballots had to be hand-counted because they were cut too short and left incompatible with the automatic counting machines.
- Elections Daily updated ratings in 14 House Races after Republicans enjoyed a monstrous advantage in the June 7th primaries. Elections Daily moved 13 of these races towards the GOP, with the exception of CA-41 (which Elections Daily moved from Solid R to Likely R). After these updates, Elections Daily favors Republicans in 220 house races, enough to flip control of the chamber. And if Republicans win all of the seats Elections Daily deems as tossups as well, they will win a commanding 241-194 majority in the chamber.
- The more moderate Republican Main Street Partnership has announced nine US house endorsements for the 2022 Midterm Cycle. The Main Street Partnership has had a very successful 2022 primary cycle this far and scored a big win with its endorsed candidate Brad Finstad defeating the more hawkish conservative Jeremy Munson in the MN-01 Special Election Primary. Many of the Main Street Partnership’s endorsed candidates are in competitive or even Biden-won districts. Finding quality candidates in these districts in 2022 will be key for the GOP’s ability to hold the chamber through 2024 and beyond.
