It’s Republicans’ turn to vote for their preferred presidential candidate in South Carolina. Only two major candidates are left actively campaigning, including the state’s former Governor Nikki Haley. She of course is facing former President Donald Trump. They will be joined by five other candidates on the ballot, most of whom have dropped out of the race. Democrats held their presidential primary contest earlier in the month, which saw President Biden notch an overwhelming victory. For more on the Republican contest, check out Nick Field’s preview of this race and more.
South Carolina is an open primary state, meaning that anyone regardless of their current party affiliation can show up and vote in the party primary of their choosing. However, voters can only vote in one party’s primary, so any voter who casts a ballot in the Democratic primary is ineligible to vote in the Republican primary.
Polls close at 7 p.m. (EST). We will have the election results below once they do.
