The seat in South Carolina’s 42nd State Senate District is vacant after Democrat Marlon Kimpson resigned to take a job in the Biden administration. The 42nd District runs from Charleston, through North Charleston, and reaches just into Dorchester County. Three Democrats ran in the September 4 primary, but none achieved a 50%+1 majority of the vote to avoid a runoff. State reps. Wendell Gilliard and Deon Tedder advanced from that race to compete in today’s runoff. Only one Republican filed to run for the vacancy so there was no primary. They will face off against the eventual Democratic nominee in a general election on November 7. Polls close at 7 p.m. (EDT). We will have the election results below once they do.
