Morning Headlines
- Yesterday, Donald Trump endorsed author and businessman Blake Masters in the Arizona GOP Senate Primary. He touted Masters’ success in the private sector and his stance on border security. He specifically attacked Masters’ top competition, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, for not fighting hard enough to stop the “rigged” 2020 Presidential Election in Arizona. He claims that Brnovich knew it was rigged but “he only views it as something he would not like to see happen again.” Masters and Brnovich have campaigned on similar America First ideals, but Masters has explicitly claimed he “thinks Trump won the 2020 election.” Trump also endorsed businessman Tim Michels in the Wisconsin GOP Governor Primary. This endorsement is extremely risky since Scott Walker’s lieutenant governor Rebecca Kleefisch has been polling much stronger in the race and has won institutional support from figures such as Walker, Nikki Haley, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Michels has said that the 2020 Presidential Election was “maybe” stolen, likely motivating Trump’s endorsement in the race.
- Progressive Conservatives dominated the Ontario Provincial Elections, despite not winning a majority of the popular vote. Ontario’s PCs held 67 seats heading into yesterday’s elections, 4 more than the 63 needed to hold power in the legislative assembly. Although some expected the PCs to lose seats, initial results show that the Tories will gain 16 seats and hold a dominating majority in the chamber. Although Liberals slightly outran the NDP in the popular vote, the NDP won 31 seats to just 8 for the Liberal Pary. In many districts, the PCs did not win a majority of the vote but the NDP and Liberals split the left-wing vote, allowing the PCs to win the seat in the first-past-the-post system.
- About three weeks after his stroke, Pennsylvania Democratic Senate Nominee John Fetterman still has not released a timetable outlining a return to the campaign trail. Many national Democratic are reportedly growing nervous about whether he will be able to run a robust campaign this summer and fall, given he has only communicated with his supporters through video messages. Elections Daily rates this race as a tossup, and it is a pivotal seat to determine Senate control for the second half of Biden’s term. Fetterman’s campaign remains clear they expect him to have a full cognitive and physical recovery.
