Another Tuesday, another election day. We are tracking election results for vacant seats in both the Florida Senate and Florida House of Representatives, as well as a Republican primary for a vacant South Carolina House of Representatives seat.
Florida State Senate District 33
The seat in Florida’s 33rd Senate District is open after Democrat Perry Thurston resigned to run for the vacancy in the 20th Congressional District caused by the death of former Rep. Alcee Hastings. The 33rd Senate District lies in Broward County, covering part of Fort Lauderdale and many of the communities north of the city. Running to replace Thurston are Democrat Rosalind Osgood, the former chair of the Broward County school board who won a Democratic primary on January 11 to advance to today’s race, and Republican Joseph Carter, a retired Broward County public school teacher who was the only Republican to file to run. This is the first time Republicans have fielded a candidate in the district since 2012. We will have election results for you once polls close at 7 p.m. (EST).
Florida State House District 88
In the Florida House of Representatives, the seat in District 88 is also vacant Democrat Omari Hardy resigned to run for the vacancy in the 20th Congressional District caused by the death of former Rep. Alcee Hastings. The 88th House District is a thin coastline district in Palm Beach County running from Palm Beach Gardens down to Delray Beach. Running to replace Hardy are Democrat Jervonte Edmonds, a former staffer in the Florida Senate who won a Democratic primary on January 11 to advance to today’s race, and Republican Guarina Torres, a retired Palm Beach County public school teacher who was the only Republican to file to run. This is another reliably safe Democratic district. We will have election results for you once polls close at 7 p.m. (EST).
South Carolina State House District 97
Up in South Carolina, the seat in state house District 97 is open after Mandy Kimmons resigned to focus on her legal career. The district covers much of Dorchester County, as well as small parts of Berkeley and Colleton Counties. Since only one Democrat filed to run, there is only a Republican primary today. Vying for the Republican nomination are Robbie Robbins, a member of the South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission, and Candace Jennings, a home-schooling mother from Summerville.
