Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction Election Results plus State Legislative Special Elections in CA, MO, OK, and WI

April 6, 2021 by Max Gowins

Tonight we have a wide array of races across the country. This first post includes results for all of the state-level races we will be covering tonight.

First up is the only statewide race of the night. It takes us to Wisconsin, where every four years voters elect a Superintendent of Public Instruction in the Spring Election. With no incumbent in the race, this year’s contest has two school district superintendents, one current and one former, facing off against each other after advancing from a February primary. Though this is a nonpartisan contest, it is publicly known that both candidates are affiliated with the Democratic Party. Polls close at 8 pm central / 9 pm eastern.

Our first state legislative special election keeps us in Wisconsin, where the seat in Senate District 13 is open after former state Senate majority leader Scott Fitzgerald was elected to Congress. The district covers six counties and sits between Madison and the Milwaukee suburbs, and reaches as far north as Dodge County. There are four candidates in this race, one Republican who won a February primary to advance to today’s general election, one Democrat, who was also a candidate in the 2020 and 2018 general elections for this seat, a candidate from the American Solidarity Party, and a candidate from a self-styled Trump Conservative Party. Polls close at 8 pm central / 9 pm eastern.

There is also a special election in the Wisconsin State House of Representatives. State House District 89, which covers three counties in northeast Wisconsin, is vacant after longtime rep. John Nygren resigned to pursue a career in the private sector. There are two candidates in this race, a Republican who won a primary back in February, and a Democrat who was also the candidate in the 2020 general election for this seat. Polls close at 8 pm central / 9 pm eastern.

Now down to Oklahoma where there is a special election for the seat in Oklahoma’s 22nd Senate District in northwest OKC and the surrounding communities. The two candidates in this race, a Republican and a Democrat, advanced to the general election after winning their respective primaries back on February 9. Polls close at 7 pm central / 8 pm eastern.

Now to Columbia, Missouri where the seat in State House District 45 is open after Kip Kendrick resigned to become State Senator Greg Razer’s Chief of Staff. The parties choose the candidates for this general election, however, no Republican was put forward for this race. There are two candidates in the race a Democrat and a Libertarian. Polls close at 7 pm central / 8 pm eastern.

Our last race tonight takes us to California State Assembly District 79 in San Diego County. The seat is vacant after Shirley Weber was appointed secretary of state by Governor Gavin Newsom after he nominated the former secretary of state, Alex Padilla, to the US Senate. In California, special election primaries place all candidates on one ballot regardless of party. If no candidate reaches a 50%+1 majority of the vote, the top two finishers move onto a general election on June 8. There a four Democrats and a Republican running for this seat. Polls close at 8 pm pacific / 11 pm eastern.
